Kaomoji

Kaomoji are read upright rather than sideways, which is why they carry so much more expression than a Western emoticon squeezed into three characters.

The parts that give kaomoji their arms and motion — ツ, ╯, づ, ʕ — come from Japanese, Cyrillic and phonetic Unicode blocks. Every modern device has them. All of these are single-line and paste anywhere.

Where these work

This page has 22 pieces: 22 single-line and 0 multi-line. The widest is 13 characters across.

Everything on this page is a single line, so there is nothing to align and nothing to break. These paste correctly into chat, bios, usernames, commit messages, spreadsheet cells and form fields alike.

Questions

How do I type kaomoji without copying them?

Windows has an emoji panel at Win + . with a kaomoji tab. macOS has Ctrl + Cmd + Space. Both are faster than copying once you know the one you want.

Why does the shrug lose a backslash when I paste it?

Some chat clients treat the backslash as an escape character. Discord and Slack both do this in certain contexts. Paste it, and if a slash disappears, type it again by hand or wrap the whole thing in a code block.

Are kaomoji safe to use in a professional context?

The mild ones — shrug, wave, cheering — read as friendly and are common in dev chat. The table flip reads as frustration, which is sometimes exactly the point.

Make your own

None of these say your name. The text to ASCII generator turns any word into a banner across 133 FIGlet fonts, and the image to ASCII converter turns a picture into text art in your browser. Both are free and neither uploads anything.
