Hand Text Symbols

Hands are how a text face gets a verb: pointing, waving, flipping something over. On their own they also work as pointers in a list.

The pointing hands are Dingbats characters and render as text everywhere. The gesture kaomoji use Japanese brackets for the arms, which is why they read as hands at all.

Where these work

This page has 20 pieces: 20 single-line and 0 multi-line. The widest is 11 characters across.

Everything on this page is a single line, so there is nothing to align and nothing to break. These paste correctly into chat, bios, usernames, commit messages, spreadsheet cells and form fields alike.

Questions

Are the pointing hands emoji?

They are text characters from the Dingbats block, but several platforms give them an emoji presentation anyway, so you may get a coloured hand. There is no fully reliable way to force the text version.

Why does the shrug break when I paste it into Discord?

The backslash is an escape character in some inputs, so it eats itself. Paste, check the result, and retype the backslash if one went missing — or send it inside a code block.

Do these count as emoji for platforms that limit emoji?

Usually not, since most filters look for emoji ranges specifically. That is a common reason people use text hands where emoji are stripped.

Make your own

None of these say your name. The text to ASCII generator turns any word into a banner across 133 FIGlet fonts, and the image to ASCII converter turns a picture into text art in your browser. Both are free and neither uploads anything.
